  8. I am providing the format decoding/encoding chart from the Mac-FTP-list 
  9. as an aid for those who only whant to know 'Which program will unmangle this 
  10. format?'  Unlike the Mac-FTP-list this will be updated only as needed.

  63. .sit refers to both 1.5 and dlx. Otherwise a '/' is used {1.5/dlx}.
  64. Note: Almost every Mac communications program can decode .bin files.

  66. *   DropStuff with Expander Enhancer is an $30 shareware addon for Stuffit
  67.     Expander.  DSEE is also used by other programs {marked with a *^} 
  68.     to expand files.  Current versions are 3.5.2 as of this writing.
  69. **  Stuffit Deluxe translators can be used with Stuffit Lite.  Current
  70.     versions are 3.5.0 as of this writing.

  72. Special formats
  73. .arj - PC format common to European sites.  Decoded by unArjMac and DeArj.
  74. .dd - Disk Doubler {Mac} format. Decoded by DDExpand and DiskDoubler.
  75. .image - Mac disk image.  Decoded and/or mounted by DiskCopy, MountImage,
  76.  Drop*Disk, and ShrinkWrap.
  77. .lzh - old PC/Amiga format, replaced by .arc and .zip; decoded by MacLHA
  78.  and macunpack.
  79. .pit - old {~1989} Mac compression format created by PackIt programs,
  80.  replaced by .sit.  In general, a program that handles .sit files can
  81.  decode .pit files as well.
  82. .pkg - AppleLink package format, replaced by .sit.  Decoded by all present
  83.  StuffIt programs.
  84. .sea - Mac format, decompresses itself and needs no external programs.
  85. .shar - Unix shell archive.  Decoded by Unshar.
  86. .taz - another name for .tar.Z
  87. .tgz - another name for .tar.z and .tar.gz {do not confuse with .tar.Z}.
  88. .txt - ASCII text file.
  89. .z - Early {~1993} suffix for Gzip files.  Due to confusion with the UNIX
  90.     'compress' suffix {.Z} it was abandoned in favor of the .gz suffix.
  91. .zoo - old {~1989} PC/Amiga format, replaced by .arc.  Decoded by MacZoo
  92.  and MacBooz.

  94. CAUTION: While Gzip is aimed at replacing the .Z format, they are 
  95. _different_ unix compression formats, and the suffixes are NOT 
  96. inchangable.  Many sites now support on-the-fly translation of these 
  97. formats; just type in the file name minus the .Z or .gz suffix.

  99. WARNING: .hqx, .txt, and .uu files are the ONLY files that can be 
  100. downloaded in ASCII mode; all others must be downloaded in BINARY {IMAGE} 
  101. mode for the file to decompress properly.  This is especially true of 
  102. ".bin" and "unpacked" files.  Otherwise you will get errors like 
  103. "unreadable file" or "file is corrupt" when you try to decompress them.
